Woman Thought She Had An Eye Infection, But It Was Surprisingly Tiny Bees Feeding On Her Tears

A Taiwanese woman went to the hospital for what she believed to be an eye infection. Instead, doctors found four tiny bees under his eyelids.
According to the New York Times, the patient, recognized only by her last name, He, felt a “sharp pain” in her left eye while participating in the tradition of tomb sweeping, an annual event to visit ancestors’ graves at clean their graves and make ritual offerings. She allegedly pulled weeds off a gravestone and rinsed what she believed to be sand from her eyes with water. Back home, she couldn’t stop crying.
His eye had become totally swollen and the pain was unbearable. The infection seemed to be getting worse.
When he arrived at Fooyin University Hospital in Taiwan, doctors found no bacterial infections. Instead, when examining He’s eyes under a microscope, the hospital’s head of ophthalmology allegedly found four bees feeding on his tear ducts.
“Under the microscope, I slowly pulled them out, one after the other,” Dr Hung Chi-ting, chief ophthalmologist at Fooyin University, said at a press conference telecast by local media last week, according to the Times.
The bees taken from He’s eyes are called “sweat bees” and are part of the halictid family. They are about a quarter of an inch in length and have a dark metallic tint. They feed primarily on pollen and nectar and, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, “have never met a flower they disliked, and they rarely find one whose pollen or nectar is inflexible.”
To supplement their diet they also need salt, so they feed on sweat and tears.
“I am for sure the sweat bees got into the eye and break in between the eye and the eyelid. They were not at the correct place at the wrong time.”
“They don’t seem to be troubled by people, so they will go to any salt source,” said Shelomi. “I think they’re a little dumb if they come to humans for their salt. They haven’t figured out what we are.”
The woman has reportedly been released and is expected to make a full recovery. The bees extracted from his eyes are still alive and will now be studied.
