The claim that they do not make them like they used to is partly true, and the reasons are economic rather than a decline in skill.

The general position among people who deal in this seriously is that genuinely rare pieces should be preserved and common ones should be worn.

Reversible alterations — taking in rather than cutting away — preserve the option, and any competent alterations person will do it that way if asked.

Why it matters beyond nostalgia

Examining older construction is the most efficient way to learn what good construction looks like, because the features are exaggerated relative to modern equivalents.

Which makes a charity shop a better education in garment quality than most shopping, and it costs nothing to look.

Storage of anything old

Where preservation is either achieved or lost.

Common on older garments and worth checking, since they affect what is possible now.

Look for stitching that differs from the rest, crease lines from previous hems, and seam allowances that have already been consumed.

A garment altered down cannot readily be returned to its original size, which limits who it will fit.
