Clothing carries an increasing number of environmental claims, and the gap between what they sound like and what they establish is wide enough to be worth mapping.

The undefined terms

Sustainable, eco-friendly, conscious, responsible, green.

None of these has a legal definition in most jurisdictions when applied to clothing.

Which means they can be used by anyone about anything, and their presence establishes only that a marketing department chose to use them.

Regulators in several markets have begun acting against unsubstantiated claims, requiring specific evidence for specific assertions, which has already changed some labelling.

The terms that do mean something

Organic, applied to cotton, has certification schemes with defined standards covering pesticide and fertiliser use, and it is audited.

It says nothing about water use, labour conditions or what happened after the fibre left the farm, unless the specific scheme covers those.

Recycled content, where certified, means what it says, and the certification generally tracks the chain of custody rather than testing the material.

Most recycled polyester in clothing comes from bottles rather than from clothing, which is a real reduction in virgin material and is not a circular textile system, since the fibre cannot readily be recycled again.

The certifications and what each covers

Different schemes measure entirely different things, which is the main source of confusion.

Some certify the absence of harmful substances in the finished product, which is about consumer safety rather than environmental impact.

Some certify organic content plus processing standards plus some social criteria.

Some certify labour conditions and pay in the supply chain without addressing environmental impact.

Some certify chemical management in production facilities.

A garment carrying one of these has met that specific standard and nothing more, and treating any of them as a general endorsement is a mistake the logos encourage.

The variable nobody labels

Total production volume.

An item made with lower impact per unit, produced in far greater quantity, can represent higher total impact than a conventional item produced in smaller numbers.

Which means a brand's improvement in per-item metrics can coexist with a substantial increase in total footprint, and both statements can be published truthfully in the same report.

This is the single largest gap between environmental reporting and environmental reality in the sector.

Use phase

A substantial share of a garment's lifetime impact comes from washing and drying, not from production.

Which means how a garment is cared for, and how long it is kept, affects total impact more than most production choices do.

Washing cooler, washing less frequently, and line drying reduce impact meaningfully and cost nothing.

This is the least commercially interesting finding in the field, which is presumably why it receives the least attention.

Durability as the underrated metric

Impact per wear falls as wears increase, which makes garment lifespan the most powerful lever available.

A durable garment worn two hundred times outperforms a lower-impact garment worn ten times by a wide margin.

Which brings the argument back to construction quality, fit and whether you actually like the thing — none of which appear in environmental frameworks and all of which determine how long something is worn.

Resale and repair

Secondary markets have grown enormously and genuinely extend garment life.

The complication identified in research is that resale does not always displace new purchase — some people sell in order to buy more.

Which means the effect depends on behaviour rather than on the mechanism, and the same is true of clothing collection schemes, where the fate of collected material varies considerably and is poorly disclosed.

What I would take from this

Treat unqualified terms as marketing. Look for specific certifications and check what they actually cover.

Weight durability and whether you will keep something heavily, because that dominates everything else.

And accept that the honest version of lower impact in clothing is buying less and keeping it longer, which no brand can sell you and which is genuinely what the evidence supports.

Dyeing and finishing

Where a large share of the environmental impact actually sits, and where labelling is silent.

Dyeing uses substantial water and energy, and the effluent carries dyes, salts and processing chemicals.

Where wastewater treatment is inadequate, the discharge is visible in local waterways, and this has been documented repeatedly in major production regions.

Finishing treatments — for wrinkle resistance, water repellency, softness — add further chemistry, some of which raises persistence concerns.

Chemical management certification addresses exactly this and appears on relatively few consumer-facing labels, because it certifies a facility rather than a product.

The transparency question

Some brands publish supplier lists down to the fabric mill and beyond.

Which does not itself establish good practice and does make verification possible, which is the necessary precondition for anything else.

A brand that will not disclose where its garments are made has removed the possibility of external scrutiny, and that refusal is itself informative.
