A bias-cut dress hangs and moves unlike anything cut conventionally. The reason is mechanical: the same cloth has entirely different properties depending on the direction it is cut.

Woven fabric has three directions

A woven cloth consists of yarns running lengthwise and crosswise, and both directions resist stretching because the yarns themselves are under tension in the weave.

Pulled diagonally, at forty-five degrees to both yarn sets, the structure behaves differently: the yarns pivot at their crossing points rather than resisting.

That pivoting allows substantial stretch in a fabric with no elastic fiber in it, and the stretch reverses when the tension is released.

The cut converts stiffness into drape

Cutting a garment so the bias runs vertically means the cloth elongates under its own weight and narrows correspondingly across the body.

The result follows the contours it hangs over, producing the fluid, skimming effect associated with the technique.

The same cloth cut on the straight grain hangs in flat planes and holds the shape of its pattern pieces, which is why the two look like different fabrics.

Construction becomes considerably harder

Bias-cut pieces distort while being handled, so cutting, marking and sewing all have to account for fabric that changes dimension as it moves.

Seams must be sewn without stretching the cloth under the machine, and the finished garment is typically hung for a period before hemming so the drop settles.

Skipping that step produces a hem that lengthens unevenly after the customer takes it home, which is a common failure in inexpensive bias dresses.

Fabric consumption rises sharply

Pattern pieces placed diagonally cannot be nested efficiently along the width of the cloth, so a great deal of fabric falls outside them as waste.

Long pieces cut on the diagonal also require wider goods or piecing, which limits which fabrics can be used at all.

The combined cost of extra cloth and slower construction is why bias cutting is rare below a certain price point despite requiring no unusual materials.

Fit tolerances change completely

Because the cloth adapts, a bias garment accommodates a range of body shapes that a fitted straight-grain garment would not.

The same property makes it unforgiving in a different way, since the fabric follows everything beneath it rather than skimming over it.

Care matters more as well, because a bias garment stored on a hanger continues to elongate under its own weight and is better folded flat.
