Colour analysis — being told you are an autumn, or a cool summer, or one of a dozen more granular categories — is old, fashionable again, and worth separating into the part with substance and the part without.

The underlying observation

Colours next to each other affect how each is perceived. This is simultaneous contrast and it is well established in colour science.

A colour worn near the face changes how skin tone is perceived, by reflecting light onto it and by providing the comparison against which it is judged.

Which is genuinely real, and anyone who has held two shirts up to their face has seen it.

The three axes

Most systems reduce to three properties, which is where the useful content is.

Undertone, meaning whether skin reads warmer or cooler, and this is the axis most systems build on.

Value, meaning how light or dark the overall colouring is, which determines whether high-contrast or low-contrast combinations look natural.

Chroma, meaning how saturated the colouring is, which determines whether muted or vivid colours sit comfortably.

Those three account for most of what any system is actually detecting.

Where the seasons came from

The four-season framework maps warm and cool against light and dark, producing four categories.

It was popularised through books in the nineteen eighties and became enormously widespread.

Subsequent systems expanded it to twelve or sixteen categories to handle the cases where four clearly did not work, which is itself an admission about the original scheme.

The expansion improved accuracy and made the system harder to apply without a consultant, which is not coincidental.

What the analysis actually involves

Draping fabric of known colour properties near the face in neutral light and observing the effect.

Neutral light is not optional. Under warm indoor lighting, or near a coloured wall, the results are meaningless.

The observations that are consistent across skilled analysts concern whether skin looks even or blotchy, whether shadows under the eyes deepen, and whether the face or the fabric dominates the impression.

These are real perceptual judgements and they are subjective, which is why two analysts frequently disagree at the margins.

The photograph problem

Online analysis from submitted photographs is common and it is unreliable.

Camera white balance, lighting, screen calibration and image processing all alter colour, sometimes substantially.

Which means the input data does not contain the information the analysis requires, regardless of the analyst's skill.

This is the clearest place where the commercial version has outrun the underlying method.

What I think is actually useful

Knowing whether high or low contrast suits you, which is the value axis and the easiest to test yourself.

Knowing whether saturated or muted colours look better on you, which is chroma.

And knowing a handful of specific colours that reliably work, arrived at empirically.

All three can be established with a mirror, daylight and an hour, without any system at all.

The limits worth stating

Skin tone changes with sun exposure and with age, and hair colour changes deliberately, so any categorisation has a shelf life.

Colours worn away from the face have far less effect, which means the whole framework applies mainly to tops, scarves and outerwear.

And the strength of the effect varies between people. Some faces are strongly affected by adjacent colour and others barely at all.

Where I land

The perceptual basis is real, the four-season framework is a simplification that was never accurate, and the elaborate commercial versions have added precision without adding validity.

Using it as a rough guide is reasonable. Treating a category assignment as a rule about what may be worn is giving a consultant's subjective judgement more authority than the underlying observation supports.

Testing it yourself

The practical version, which requires nothing but daylight and a mirror.

Stand near a window, away from coloured walls, with no makeup and hair pulled back.

Hold fabrics up under the chin one at a time and look at the skin rather than at the fabric.

What you are watching for is whether shadows under the eyes deepen, whether the skin looks even or patchy, and whether your face or the fabric draws the eye first.

Compare in pairs rather than singly, since the judgement is comparative and absolute assessments are unreliable.

The metals question

Frequently used as a shortcut for undertone.

The idea is that warmer colouring suits gold and cooler colouring suits silver.

It holds loosely and plenty of people look fine in both, which suggests the axis is weaker than the systems assume.

Rose gold sits between and suits a wider range, which is part of why it became so widely worn.

What to do with the result

Use it for things worn near the face and ignore it below the waist, where the effect is negligible.

And treat it as a preference for what flatters rather than a prohibition, since wearing something you like in a colour that is merely acceptable is a perfectly reasonable choice.
