The structure of a fragrance is the reason it changes over the course of wearing, and understanding it makes testing considerably more useful.

The note pyramid

Fragrance materials evaporate at different rates depending on molecular weight and volatility.

Top notes are the most volatile, perceived immediately and gone within perhaps fifteen minutes. Citrus and light aromatics live here.

Heart notes emerge as the top notes fade and dominate for a few hours. Florals and spices generally.

Base notes are the least volatile, developing slowly and persisting for hours. Woods, resins, musks and animalics.

Which means the first impression on a paper strip tells you almost nothing about what you will actually be wearing.

Why testing on skin matters

Skin temperature accelerates evaporation, and skin chemistry — surface oils, pH, moisture — affects how materials behave.

Which is why the same fragrance genuinely smells different on different people, and it is not imagination.

Testing on paper gives the composition. Testing on skin gives what you will experience.

Waiting several hours before deciding is the only reliable method, and it is why buying a fragrance in a shop within ten minutes is close to random.

Concentration

The terms describe the proportion of aromatic compounds in the alcohol base.

Eau de cologne is the lightest, then eau de toilette, then eau de parfum, then parfum or extrait at the highest.

Higher concentration means longer wear and generally a heavier presence, and the ranges overlap between houses since the terms are not tightly regulated.

A higher concentration is also frequently a different composition rather than the same one made stronger, with different proportions between the layers.

Naturals and synthetics

Almost every modern fragrance uses both, and the distinction is less meaningful than it sounds.

Natural materials are complex mixtures with hundreds of components, varying by harvest, region and year.

Synthetics are single molecules with consistent behaviour, and many have no natural equivalent at all, which has made whole categories of fragrance possible.

Several natural materials are restricted for allergen or conservation reasons, which is why some classic compositions have been reformulated.

Reformulation is common, generally undisclosed, and the reason a fragrance bought now may not match one remembered from years ago.

Fixatives

Materials that slow the evaporation of more volatile components, extending wear.

Musks are the most common, and modern synthetic musks are the backbone of most contemporary fragrance.

Some people cannot smell certain musks at all, due to a genetic variation in olfactory receptors, which means a fragrance that seems to disappear on you may still be perceptible to everyone else.

This is a real and well documented phenomenon and it causes considerable confusion.

Sillage and longevity

Two different properties frequently conflated.

Sillage is how far the fragrance projects. Longevity is how long it lasts on skin.

A fragrance can be long-lasting and close to the skin, or projecting and short-lived.

Skin type affects longevity substantially — dry skin holds fragrance poorly, and applying to moisturised skin genuinely extends wear.

Storage

Fragrance degrades with light, heat and oxygen.

Which means a bottle on a sunny bathroom shelf is being destroyed steadily, and a bathroom is the worst place in the house for it.

Cool, dark and upright, with the bottle kept reasonably full, preserves it for years.

Citrus-heavy compositions degrade fastest, since the top notes are the least stable.

Buying sensibly

Sample first, on skin, over a full day. Decanted samples are inexpensive and widely available.

Test one at a time, since the nose adapts quickly and comparing three at once produces unreliable impressions.

And be aware that what you smell after twenty minutes of wearing is not what others smell, because your own olfactory system adapts to a constant stimulus within minutes.

Which is the source of most over-application, and asking someone else is the only real check.

Families and how they are grouped

A rough taxonomy that helps in navigating rather than in describing precisely.

Floral, oriental or amber, woody, and fresh are the four broad groupings most classification systems use, with numerous subdivisions.

The boundaries are soft and modern compositions frequently sit across several, which is why family labels are a starting point rather than a description.

Knowing which family a fragrance you already like belongs to is genuinely useful for finding others, and it is the most practical use of the taxonomy.

Application

Pulse points are conventionally recommended on the reasoning that warmth aids diffusion, and the effect is modest.

Spraying onto clothing makes fragrance last considerably longer, because fabric does not metabolise or absorb it the way skin does, and it can stain some materials.

Rubbing wrists together is commonly said to crush the molecules, which is not chemically meaningful, and it does accelerate evaporation of the top notes through friction and heat.

Applying to damp skin after showering genuinely extends longevity, which is the one piece of common advice with a clear mechanism behind it.
