If you have noticed more hair lengths in the shower drain or on the hairbrush than usual, you are not alone and we’re here to help. Hormonal changes, aging, stress, and constant color changes can damage and weaken your hair, causing it to thin out and, in extreme cases, fall out. But fear not, this can be fixed! There are so many options out there (Hello, shampoos, conditioners, supplements, and oils!), So we brought in dermatologist and founder of @brownskinder, Adeline Kikam, and Reyad Fritas, founder of the glamorous Suite Reyad, to find out what really works for growth of hair. Below, tips will help you grow thicker, longer hair in no time.
DO: Take a look at your diet
“The nutrients our bodies need for healthy hair and nail growth can be adequately obtained through proper nutrition,” Kikam explains. “Aim for a healthy diet with nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, protein, selenium, and vitamin D, that support healthy hair, nails, and skin, in general, and if you cannot do this with diet alone, use multivitamin supplements.”
DON’T: Use harsh chemicals
“A lot of clients have thin hair because it’s overtreated,” says Reyad. “It’s great to use soft dyes that have no ammonia, but bleaching and highlighting the hair will not be helpful in growing thicker hair.”
DO: Try a hair mask
Think of this as the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a home spa night. Hair masks strengthen your hair by nourishing it with moisture, says Reyad. He loves Virtue’s Restorative Treatment Mask. He says, “You can see a quick result with alpha keratin which binds the hair and heals damage.”
DON’T: Try supplements without consulting your doctor
Kikam says, “Please consult your doctor before starting any supplements.” “The multivitamin market is largely chaotic, and some growth difficulties in hair may be related to heredity such as androgenetic alopecia.”
DO: Rethink your shampoo and conditioner
Reyad says, “Remove any conditioner or shampoo that contains severe ingredients.” By making the switch, you’ll make sure you’re giving all the nourishing ingredients to you hair that it needs.
DON’T: Forget your scalp
Kikam says, “A healthy scalp is important for maintaining healthy growth of hair.” One way to do this is to give yourself a soothing scalp massage. “It regulates the flow of nutrients and oxygen to the hair lengths. It also allows for an overall relaxing experience and good stress relief. Also, moisturize the scalp with oils like argan! ”
