Gucci Resets Itself On The Standard Fashion Calendar

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the fashion industry has faced its problems. Store closures, legacy brands going bankrupt and, recently, fashion houses are postponing or canceling upcoming fashion shows. Gucci is the latest house to change strategy for Fashion Week, announcing that it will only air twice a year instead of its usual five catwalks.
Over the weekend, Gucci’s Alessandro Michele took to the brand’s official Instagram page to share six letters from his journal, Notes from the Silence, a collection of entries written from March 29 to May 16 detailing his recent discoveries and his plans for the future of Gucci. Covering 18 Instagram posts, Michele explained in a post that he decided to step back from the “worn-out ritual of seasons and shows to find a new cadence, closer to my expressive appeal.”
He added that “in a year, we will only meet twice, to share chapters of a new story. Irregular chapters, joyful and absolutely free, which can be written mixing rules and genres, feeding on new spaces, communication platforms and linguistic codes.” On May 25, Monday, Michele called a gathering to strengthen his notes, adding that terms like “cruise” and “pre-fall” don’t stimulate his creativity and introduced another term into the fray – Epilogue, which is the title of Gucci’s upcoming collection which will debut July 17 during Milan Digital Fashion Week, by WWD.
The news comes nearly a month after Saint Laurent announced it would no longer follow the fashion schedule set for 2020 and would remain absent from Paris Fashion Week as the pandemic slowed production. Following this example, Michele plans to show only in the fall and spring, and has announced that he will be launching a designated shopping section on gucci.com for customers who identify as fluid type, titled Gucci. MX.
